HOW THE PROJECT WAS BORN

What started in May 2014 as a friendly chat around a couscous ends up in the exciting project of a hand blown glass factory in Marrakech. ‘Soverre’, the last hand blown glass factory in Morroco has just closed.
The typical morrocan tea glass, that special object, with its distinctive silouhette and imperfections that belongs to their culture was going to disappear.
Bouchaib and Marc, both very sensitive to the enviroment, could not give up and lose this ancient as well as conteporary object, since all materials involved in the process of manufacturing are recycled, from glass to packaging.
To get to understand this project, it is necessary to appreciate the magic engaged in the craftman’s work and the harmony in the process.

Nostaliga and passion lead these two entrepreneurs to open the Kessy factory in may 2015.

THE HAND BLOWN GLASS

The glass manufacturing process is dated 3000 years B.C. It was initially used for decorative pur poses but was quickly introduced as a domestic tool. Currently the hand blown glass still exists as an artistic object and only endures as a handmade object in countries with strong traditions, such as morroco, mexico and egypt.
Nevertheless, the hand blown glass is still made using ancestral processes and techniques, which are transmited amongst artisans who work in very difficult conditions using rudimentary and rough tools..
The production goes trough three phases:

Phase 1: the glass, coming from 100% recycled material, is introduced in an oven over 1000º C to be melted. The artisan gathers up from the molten glass deposit a glass ball using a long metallic rod. The glass ball is then rolled on a marble plaque to prepare the blowing.
Phase 2: the artisan blows into the rod to inflate the molted glass ball, for instance, like balloons are blown up.
Phase 3: the definitive shape desired is obtained introducing the inflated glass ball, which is still .
malleable, into a mould. The object obtained is cutted to the height desired and it is cooled down in
a progressive refrigeration oven.

THE OBJECT

The natural color is determined by the origin og the recycled glass. The manufacturing process involves light inperfections. The dimensions can suffer small variations up to a couple milimeters. All these characteristics make up the charm of the product. In spite of being a handcrafted object it is very resistent. Can be dishwashed and allows moderated temperatures in a conventional oven.
It is highly recommended to avoid sharp temperature contrasts.
